Isla Vista
Isla Vista, CA 2009-2010

The Isla Vista series is part of group exhibition GroupSC 2009, an intimate view of Southern California. The idea being to subjectively document a neighborhood the artist resides, works or plays in I have spent extended amounts of time in Isla Vista in 2009 and 2010 documenting the life and ways of a place notorious for ideology and carelessness at the same time.

Isla Vista offers a unique mixture of students, families and outcasts. Bordered by open land to the north and the University of California in the south, this community is a small pocket sheltered from “the real world”. One might argue that every day life in IV is doing its part to keep non-residents away as well. Street parties, riots and an ongoing flow of students on beach cruisers and skateboards are what IV is recognized for.
But there is another side to Isla Vista. Organic gardens for lease, beautiful cliffs and beaches and playgrounds for kids are as much a part of the area as the sight of barely clothed not-quite-adults.

The images created for this series are impressions of an area and their inhabitants. They are intended to be unbiased and purely narrate my encounters and the happenings unfolding in front of me. My age group is under-represented in the area and disconnected me from any social pressures at hand allowing for a unique perspective.
