In 2012 I documented a trip to China for my friend Bryon Friedman. Bryon was making bamboo ski poles under the brand Soul Poles at the time and needed a bamboo supplier. My series the Bamboo Diaries is based on this trip. I had taken all these Iphone photos while traveling, particularly snaps of these stickers we found that had jokes in Chinese with an English translation on them. I wanted to use these Iphone images for something ever since that trip but the right project never presented itself. Until now. The combination of wood panel and carbon transfer works I have been busy with turned out to be the catalyst for this piece. I have many large chromogenic prints from the Bamboo Diaries series and this is one of my favorite images from that body of work. So I got to work.
