Portrait of Dan Connell
Early morning portrait of Dan Connell during his “Double-Everest” attempt on Santa Barbara’s Old San Marcos Pass road (OSM).
Quick background: Everesting is the pursuit of climbing, on a bike, foot, or whatever way, the altitude of Mount Everest, 29,029’. So doing a double Everest is climbing, in this case on a bicycle, 60,000’. Dan is doing this in one run by attempting 50 ascencions of OSM.
I set up in this corner with two strobes in the pitch black at around 6 am on day 2. Dan rode up the hill just as I was about to be done setting up and I knew my only chance to get him at that point was on a descent since it would be daylight by the time he came back up. I finished setting up, the fog was doing amazing things, but the light started creeping up on me. When he finally came through he stopped and told me that he had just gotten sick at the top and had to take a quick break. So I did not get a climbing shot here, nor a racing down one but a pretty telling portrait.
I’ve been documenting this attempt from the start and will post some more later…
