Gibraltar is “the” road to climb on a road bike in Santa Barbara. Part of multiple Tours of California, this 6.8 mile stretch of windy road is beyond spectacular. Views of the Channel Islands, as well as the coast from Point Mugu to Point Conception, or, as in this photograph, a pillow of marine layer.
Any rider who has tackled this challenge will know this view. It is possibly the most iconic glance to the right one can do while wrestling with sweat in your eyes and a heart rate in the clouds. Get here from the bottom in under 30 minutes, and you’re doing pretty well.
